Abstract

The aim of study is to determine the effect of shift work on the social lives of midwives and nurses. This descriptive study conducted with 310 midwives and nurses in a women's health education and research hospital in Ankara, who worked in shifts. Data were collected by questionnaire. Number, percentage and chi-square tests were applied. Participants stated that they could not spend much time with their families (87.7%) and could not spare enough time for their children (91.3%) due to busy and irregular working hours (56.0%), fatigue (19.6%), shift work(17.3%) and lack of time (7,1%). While 11.9% of the participants read magazines and newspapers, 44.5% did not read any book in the month before the study. As a result, shift work results in midwives and nurses to recede from their social lives.
