AN ANALYSIS OF THE CORRELATION BETWEEN PEER RELATIONSHIPS AND MORAL VALUES OF CHILDREN WHO ARE IN NEED OF PROTECTION AND CHILDREN LIVING WITH THEIR PARENTS

Abstract

In order for them to establish healthy peer relationships, it is important for children to display values that are adopted by society. With the Children's Houses system established by the Ministry of Family and Social Policies, the aim is to allow the children under the protection of the state, to establish healthier peer relationships by having the ones who are close in age, stay in the same houses in groups that are not numerous, which will in turn allow them to establish healthier relations with society and adopt society's values . This study was carried out to examine the nature of peer relationships and the moral values of children that live with their families and children in need of protection, who are between 61-72 months old. The research is in the relational screening model. The population of the study consists of 356 children, who were selected from among children who live with their families and go to kindergartens of Keçiören District in Ankara Province that are bound to Ministry of National Education, and 48 children in need of protection (entirety of the population) who are aged 61 to 72 months old and live in children's houses in the province of Ankara. In the study, "General Information Forms", "Moral Value Structure Determination Scale" and "Ladd-Profilet Child Behavior Scale" were employed. The results of the study, according to the Ladd-Profilet Child Behavior Scale (P<0.05), have shown that the children who live alongside their families have a favourable and significant difference. However, in both children groups, a positive correlation was determined between the scores "Moral Value Structure Determination Scale" and the scores of prosocial sub-dimension of Ladd-Profilet Child Behavior Scale and a negative correlation was determined between the same scale and the scores regarding sub-dimension of antisocial, anxiety-fearfulness, exclusiveness, hyperactivity and aggressiveness.
