Abstract

As the rapidly emerging technology makes it easier to access the information, our society called as “Information Society” today becomes a Surveillance Society. The interactivity of the communication tools contributes to this shift. Lyon states that it is more than bureaucracy. He points out that surveillance is strongly related to our conformity to the present social structure and thus it can be a tool of social control. The communication technologies used in daily life and their interactivity contribute to gathering information on individuals. In other words, this easy access to the information along with its storage, process, grouping and sharing allows for surveillance. Children begin to use these interactive communication tools from an early age. These children not only use these tools but they might also generate the content. This scope of this study is 280 students of seven secondary schools in Eskişehir, Turkey. The data have been collected via a survey designed to identify the awareness of secondary school students (5th, 6th, 7th, 8th grade, aged between 11-15) on the surveillance capacity of the interactive media. Variables such as age, gender or socio-economic backgrounds have also been analyzed.
